A team of Year 8 students represented SIDE in the Synergy Schools Solar Challenge regional heats at Newman College on Thursday 5 April. The team of Issy, Jacqleen and Ella won the SIDE Solar Car Challenge, and went on to achieve third place in a field of 13 schools.

Leigh Hobbs is a man of many talents: author, painter, illustrator and sculptor. Leigh was SIDE’s guest artist in February working with Year 7, 9 and 10 Art students. He recently completed two years as Australian Children’s Laureate, during which he promoted quality children’s literature.

Students from SIDE recently attended the Halogen National Young Leaders Day at the Perth Convention Centre. Year 12 students Alysa, Charlotte, Fleur and Imke were accompanied by Student Services Coordinator Stacey Mylonas. They attended sessions with students from throughout Western Australia.

Year 8 SIDE students are building solar cars as part of a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) project for the Synergy Schools Solar Challenge. This initiative has been developed in partnership with the Science Teachers Association of WA.
