Full-time enrolment at SIDE is available to students who meet one of the categories below. The guidelines outline how to determine enrolment eligibility for each category.
Students enrolling in the Dance/Ballet Schools category must be Western Australian residents who are enrolled in a full-time SIDE partnered ballet/dance school and unable to attend mainstream school.
Only students in secondary school will be accepted.
For enrolment to be accepted, parents/caregivers must agree to the following conditions of enrolment:
- Students must attend SIDE a day per week, from 8.30 am to 1.30 pm.
- Students must attend weekly Webex lessons on other days, supervised by Dance/Ballet studio staff.
- Students will complete the academic program set by SIDE for their year level.
- Students will sit tests and exams on site at SIDE.
Evidence required
- Proof of Western Australian address.
- An acceptance letter from a SIDE partner ballet/dance school.
Reminders
The Child Safe Standards apply to most organisations that work or volunteer with children and young people, including schools.
Parents and carers are reminded to be vigilant to ensure that all organisations that work with their child are complying with the Child Safe Standards. This includes ensuring that any adults that work with your child hold a current Working with Children Check or equivalent.
You can do this by requesting written confirmation from the organisations or individuals involved. You can also check if someone’s Working with Children Check is current .
Students enrolling in the High-performance Arts/Sports category must be Western Australian residents entering Years 9-12 and have exceptional sporting or performing arts commitments which prevent them from attending mainstream school.
Applications under the sports stream require endorsement from a recognised sporting organisation.
Recognised organisations are Australian-based elite sport clubs that contract students in a professional capacity.
Evidence required
A letter from the recognised sports/performing arts organisation that:

Confirms the student’s high performance status and provides:
- Achievement records such as rankings, awards or certificates; or
- A contract of employment.

Confirms the student’s exceptional commitments and provides a detailed schedule, including days and times, which demonstrates:
- Sports/performing arts commitments that prevent regular school attendance; and
- How the student will participate in their education.
- Includes contact details of a sporting/performing arts supervisor who is authorised to liaise with SIDE for regular check-ins regarding the student’s progress and wellbeing.
SIDE as a WA government school must provide 24 hours of student instruction per week. Students are expected to manage a full-time study load, which includes attending online classes when possible.

Students enrolling in the geographically isolated category must be Western Australian residents who live in a remote area, where it is not feasible to travel to a local mainstream government school.
Primary school students are encouraged to explore the Department of Education - Schools of the Air as a viable option. Campuses are located at Carnarvon, Kalgoorlie, Derby, Meekatharra and Port Hedland.
The student needs to demonstrate that they are geographically isolated in WA as defined by at least one of the categories below:
- The distance between home and the nearest appropriate government school/s is 16 km or more and the distance between home and available transport service/s to the nearest appropriate government school/s is 4.5 km or more.
- The distance between home and the nearest appropriate government school/s is 8 km or more and distance between home and available transport service/s to the nearest appropriate government school/s is 8 km or more.
- The travel time between home and the nearest appropriate government school/s return journey takes 3 hours or more.
Available transport service means any regular scheduled public transport, private carrier or school service that currently provides a pick-up point within the specified distances of the student's home or would do so if requested by the family.
Evidence required
- Proof of Western Australian address.
- The closest government school and/or school bus service may be contacted to confirm that the student’s current residential address meets the minimum distance requirements outlined above and that no school bus service is available.
The Referral Program is for students with specific circumstances where their current school submits an application to SIDE.

Students enrolling in the Temporary Travel category must be Western Australian residents who are temporarily unable to attend a mainstream school because they will soon commence travel within Australia or overseas.
Travel and enrolment at SIDE must be for a minimum of at least 20 school weeks or one Western Australian school semester.
Temporary travel may be required due to a parent’s/carer’s work commitments or an extended family holiday. Enrolment at SIDE is valid for the duration of the student’s temporary travel. Once travel ends, the student must recommence enrolment at another education provider.
Students travelling...
Within Australia
The maximum enrolment period is up to one year.
Students are not eligible to apply for SIDE if they are enrolled at an interstate school.
Evidence required
- Detailed holiday itinerary.
- Evidence of booked flights/accommodation/confirmed travel arrangements.
- Evidence that may be approved by the SIDE Principal.
- An Alternative Attendance Arrangement (Section 24) is used for primary school students who are temporarily travelling. This arrangement is for students who temporarily attend another school or who wish to undertake an alternative attendance arrangement for short-term programs provided by another school or training organisation away from the student’s current school.
- Please complete Stage 1 of the application process so our Enrolments Team can initiate the Section 24 arrangement with your child's current government primary school.
Temporarily Travelling Overseas
The maximum enrolment period for students travelling overseas is up to two years.
Enrolments are approved for a maximum of one year at a time.
Please note that students are not eligible to apply for SIDE if they are enrolled at an alternative education provider.
Evidence required
- Travel documents, such as airline tickets or a detailed itinerary.
- Current passport with an expiry date of a year in advance.
- Signed parent/care-giver work contract with place of employment and time period of employment, if applicable.
- An Alternative Attendance Arrangement (Section 24) is used for primary school students who are temporarily travelling. This arrangement is for students who temporarily attend another school or who wish to undertake an alternative attendance arrangement for short-term programs provided by another school or training organisation away from the student’s current school.

Reminders
It is expected that students who have been, or expect to be, based in a location overseas for more than two years should enrol in a mainstream school in the location where they are based.
