SIDE Science students were privileged to hear Dr Helen Maynard-Casely present on Webex on Friday 23rd August. In 2019 Dr Maynard-Casely gave the Australian Institute of Physics Women in Physics lecture. Helen is an Instrument Scientist based at the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO). She uses neutrons to investigate the materials that make up our solar system.

Helen’s passion for her work was evident when she visited SIDE to deliver an online presentation in SIDE’s web conferencing application, Webex. Not only did her session link to Science Week - it also covered content from the Year 11 and 12 ATAR Physics courses.

Helen’s presentation focused on neutrons and their applications in many fields of science. She told participants that neutrons are sub-atomic particles that can save the world and used examples from medicine and battery storage to demonstrate that understanding neutrons has the capacity to help scientists in many scientific fields.

All SIDE Science students have access to the recording of the presentation in Moodle through the Science Lab.

Thanks to Science teacher Diana Tomazos for securing Dr Maynard-Casely to speak to SIDE students.
