SIDE once again has entered into Synergy’s Schools Solar Challenge.

This joint initiative with the Science Teachers Association of WA enables Year 6 and Year 8 students of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics to get involved in a fun, hands-on solar energy initiative. A dedicated group of SIDE Year 8s have been discovering what makes the fastest solar powered car using STEM principles.

They have discovered how the angle of the sun’s rays affect power, the mechanical advantages of gearing, how electric motors produces motion and have combined this knowledge to construct a super-fast car that only relies on renewable energy to run.

Last week saw the student race against each other to determine the winner of the SIDE solar car challenge. Well done Charlie, Isabella and Layla who will represent SIDE at the metropolitan finals at Newman College on 28 March.
