SIDE Year 12 student, Nikita Mawhirt has had a busy start to 2019. As well as her Year 12 ATAR studies, Nikita has been a member of the two WA teams competing at national championships in February and March.
Nikita was a member of the WA Fencing team which was victorious at the 2019 Australian Junior (U20) National Fencing Championships in Victoria. The WA team came up against the strong Queensland team in the final whose team included the individual gold medallist from earlier in the day. WA was down 33-35 coming into the final, and Nikita was finishing the match against the individual champion. She performed exceptionally well and managed to win 43-40! It was an exciting finish to the bout and the whole WA team was ecstatic.
Nikita also was part of the WA team of 12 which competed at the 2019 Australian Modern Pentathlon Championships held in Queensland in March. The Modern Pentathlon consists of 5 sports: fencing, swimming, horse riding, running and shooting. Nikita was keen to enjoy the competition after her slow start back to training after the Youth Olympics in 2018, however she was very happy with her performance. She completed her first 1.20m show jumping round, she competed in the Women’s Senior Event, and was over the moon when she attained a Silver medal in the Senior Event!
