STUDENTS       DOE STAFF

The SIDE Languages department has been long recognised as a centre for excellence in K-12 language education. We teach French, Indonesian, Italian and Japanese, and through the SIDE Primary Languages Program offer online learning programs to students in regional schools where a face-to-face languages teacher may not be available.

Within the Department of Education, it is both a Lead Language School and a Teacher Development School: Languages. Lead Language Schools support the sharing of teacher expertise across schools and the online delivery of language programs. As a Teacher Development School the expertise of the SIDE language teachers is used across government schools to develop professional learning opportunities that share curriculum expertise and exemplary teaching and learning practice.

Two SIDE Languages teachers have recently been recognised for their excellence in teaching, and their contribution to language education in WA.

Sandra JacksonSIDE Indonesian teacher, Sandra Jackson is joint recipient of The Modern Language Teachers’ Association of WA Hilde Dixon Award, which is the highest honour for language teachers in WA. The Hilde Dixon Award recognises and congratulates excellence in the teaching of languages, and commitment to language education in the classroom and through involvement in language professional associations in Western Australia. The award, presented annually, consists of a trophy, a certificate and $500.
Brigitte BlunsdonSIDE French teacher, Brigitte Blunsdon received an outstanding teacher’s award at the recent Professional Teaching Council of WA awards night. These awards are nominated by colleagues and are across all education sectors, including independent schools and universities. Brigitte’s award recognises her excellent and ongoing work for the Teachers of French Association Western Australia, and her contribution to the professional learning of her French colleagues.
