In support of the Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF), SIDE staff participated in the Great Book Swap on Indigenous Literacy Day, Wednesday 2 September. The Great Book Swap was hosted by the teacher librarians, in conjunction with the Whole School Literacy and Numeracy Committee. A wonderful display of books by Indigenous authors was also created in the SIDE Library Resource Centre.

More than 50 staff attended the event over morning tea, swapping their favourite book for a gold coin donation. The event raised over $140 for the ILF. The ILF was founded in 2005 and is a not-for-profit organisation. Money donated as a result of SIDE's Great Book Swap will help them provide literacy resources, books and visits to remote Indigenous children and communities.

ILF LogoIndigenous Literacy Day follows on from Children's Book Week (22 August - 28 August), for which The Lost Girl by Indigenous author Amberlin Kwaymullina and illustrator Leanne Tobin was shortlisted for the Crichton Award for New Illustrators. This and other books are available to be borrowed by SIDE students. Contact the SIDE Library Resource Centre for more information.
