2025 | Term 4 | Week 10

The School of Isolated and Distance Education recently brought career learning to life with the Mini Industry Roadshow’s visit to Brookton District High School. Through a series of hands-on workshops delivered by professional industry trainers, students had the opportunity to explore a variety of career pathways, build practical skills, and gain real-world insight into different trades and professions—all without leaving their school environment.

Cabinetry: Our wonderful trainer Nathan’s cabinetry workshops are more than just working with wood – they’re a fun, hands-on way to see maths in action. Students use addition, subtraction, fractions, and geometry as they measure, cut, and assemble their pieces, putting problem-solving and careful planning into practice. They also get to be creative, turning their ideas into a small take-home project while learning about the tools and techniques used in the construction industry. By the end, students not only built something they could take home but also got a real taste of what working in the trades is all about.

Creative Engineering and Design: Our amazing trainer Owen, lead hands-on workshops exploring engineering and the creative process engineers use to design the things we rely on every day. Students took part in fun, interactive building challenges that follow the five-step design process: defining the problem, brainstorming ideas, planning, creating, and testing solutions. These activities encourage teamwork, critical thinking, and problem-solving, giving students a real taste of how engineers turn ideas into functional, innovative designs.

All Directions Performance and Rigging: The fabulous Aidan introduced the students to the dynamic high-energy industry of professional rigging and scaffolding. Students engaged in rope skills, working at heights, WHS for rigging, and teamwork skills. Students also explored pulleys, levers and how other lifting systems work, maths for rigging such as calculating weight distribution, safety awareness, communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to perform physical tasks. It was a terrific hands-on experience.
