2025 | Term 4 | Week 9
SIDE and the Mini Industry Roadshow had the pleasure of visiting Corrigin District High school in the wheatbelt region and Mount Barker District High school in the Southwest region of Western Australia. Our professional and successful trainers presented workshops and activities to students in the areas of medical research, creative engineering and design, and cabinetry.
Cabinetry: Our wonderful trainer Nathan’s cabinetry workshops are more than just working with wood – they’re a fun, hands-on way to see maths in action. Students use addition, subtraction, fractions, and geometry as they measure, cut, and assemble their pieces, putting problem-solving and careful planning into practice. They also get to be creative, turning their ideas into a small take-home project while learning about the tools and techniques used in the construction industry. By the end, students not only built something they could take home but also got a real taste of what working in the trades is all about.
Creative Engineering and Design: Our amazing trainer Owen, lead hands-on workshops exploring engineering and the creative process engineers use to design the things we rely on every day. Students took part in fun, interactive building challenges that follow the five-step design process: defining the problem, brainstorming ideas, planning, creating, and testing solutions. These activities encourage teamwork, critical thinking, and problem-solving, giving students a real taste of how engineers turn ideas into functional, innovative designs.
Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research: Students were offered the opportunity to step into the shoes of a medical researcher, learning about innovative advancements in the field and engaging in fascinating activities on the future of medical research. The hands-on workshop captivated students as they worked collaboratively in a simulated laboratory to “find a cure.” This experience not only ignited a passion for science among the students but also broadened their horizons about potential career paths in the medical and healthcare industry.
