2025 | Term 4 | Week 6
The School of Isolated and Distance Education, along with the Mini Industry Roadshow, visited the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia, stopping at Bruce Rock District High School and Kellerberrin District High School. Students took part in hands-on workshops led by professional trainers Gianna (Marine Biology), Finnian (Plumbing), and Nathan (Cabinetry), allowing the students to build practical skills and explore a range of exciting future career pathways.
Carpentry: The Cabinetry-in-Schools session with Nathan was an engaging and hands-on experience for students. Nathan shared his knowledge of design and explained why accuracy and attention to detail are so important in the construction industry. Students enjoyed building their own take-home project, which allowed them to show their creativity and develop new woodworking skills.
Marine Biology: Gianna, who specialises in sharks, whale sharks, and orcas, led an engaging discovery session focused on marine life and what students might find along a beach. Students discussed issues around human-made materials in our oceans and the rising concerns of microplastics, their impact on oceans and reefs, and ways to help protect marine environments. Students shared thoughtful ideas about how to reduce, reuse, and recycle within their communities, making the session both fun and highly informative.
Plumbing: Finnian’s hands-on workshop introduced students to the fundamentals of plumbing through practical, engaging activities. Students learned how to safely use essential plumbing tools, practise pipe fitting, identify and repair leaks, and understand the basics of water pressure management. The session also highlighted the importance of safety in the workplace and responsible water use, helping students understand how plumbing plays a key role in everyday life.
Thank you to Bruce Rock and Kellerberrin District High Schools for welcoming us into your schools.
