2025 | Term 4 | Week 4
The School of Isolated and Distance Education and the Mini Industry Roadshow travelled throughout the Midwest area visiting Carnamah District High School, Dalwallinu District High School, and Jurien Bay District High School. Our professional trainers Nathan, Finnian and Gianna engaged the students in practical workshops covering the fields of Carpentry, Plumbing and Marine Biology. The sessions not only actively trained students in useful skills but also provided invaluable insights into various trades and potential future career pathways.
Carpentry: Gianna, who specialises in sharks, whale sharks, and orcas, led an engaging practical discovery session focused on marine life and what we might find along a beach. Discussions around human-made materials introduced students to microplastics, their impact on oceans and reefs, and ways to help protect marine environments. Students shared thoughtful ideas about how to reduce, reuse, and recycle within their communities, making the session both fun and highly informative.
Marine Biology: The amazing Owen ran an inspiring workshop in engineering, which saw students build games based around the 5-step design process to solve a problem, and showed student the creative process that engineers undertake to design everything man-made in our world.
Plumbing: Finnian’s hands-on workshop introduced students to the fundamentals of plumbing through practical, engaging activities. Students learned how to safely use essential plumbing tools, practise pipe fitting, identify and repair leaks, and understand the basics of water pressure management. The session also highlighted the importance of safety in the workplace and responsible water use, helping students understand how plumbing plays a key role in everyday life. Through problem-solving tasks and teamwork, students developed confidence, resilience, and self-reliance while gaining skills that will be useful both at home and in future career pathways.
Thank you to Carnamah, Dalwallinu, and Jurien Bay District High Schools for welcoming us into your schools. We loved spending time with your students and being part of your communities. We hope you enjoyed the awesome workshops delivered by our trainers and that students walked away feeling inspired and excited about future career options.
