The SIDE Career Department was thrilled to deliver its highly acclaimed Mini Industry Roadshow (MiR) to Norseman District High School and Esperance District High School. Both schools are unique, with Esperance offering sweeping ocean vistas, a rugged archipelago, wetlands of international importance, plus unique flora, and fauna. Norseman region is the southern gateway to Western Australia; it has magnificent outback landscapes from ancient rocky outcrops and salt lakes to the Great Western Woodlands that cover 160,000 square kilometres.

Our visit to these wonderful schools gave SIDE and our professional industry trainers the opportunity to deliver amazing hands-on skills workshops in the fields of cabinetry, marine biology and tourism, and hospitality.

Carpentry: The Cabinetry-in-Schools sessions by Nathan were an inspiring and immersive experience, where Nathan shared his expertise in design, emphasising the critical role of precision and accuracy in the carpentry industry. He also highlighted the diverse career opportunities available across various trade sectors. Students left the session not only with a deeper understanding of the industry but also with a sense of accomplishment, having completed a personalised take-home project.

Hospitality: Bonnie captivated students with a lively and interactive role-playing workshop, highlighting the immense opportunities within the hospitality industry. Through a high-energy café simulation, students experienced the fast-paced nature of the field while honing their professional customer service skills and understanding the critical importance of teamwork.

Marine Biology and Tourism: Gianna, who specialises in sharks, whale sharks, and orcas conducted a hands-on discovery session about the ocean and the importance of maintaining clean and healthy waterways for the benefit of all life on earth. The students explored how microplastics are a major concern for our environment and the impact the microscopic material has on our lives. The students contributed their ideas on how to reuse, reduce, recycle in their communities. It was a fun and informative learning experience for the students.

We were delighted we could take SIDE’S Careers workshops to students from Norseman District High School and Esperance District High School. Our workshops are created to give students an opportunity to try a taster course, to ask questions of professional industry trainers, and a provide glimpse into future career opportunities.
