2025 | Term 2 | Week 10
The School of Isolated and Distance Education (SIDE), along with professional trainers from the Mini Industry Roadshow, recently had the pleasure of visiting Shark Bay School. Located in the westernmost part of Australia, Shark Bay is renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, rich biodiversity, and unique ecosystems found nowhere else in the world. During the visit, students had the valuable opportunity to explore a range of career pathways, including music, medical research, and plumbing, through interactive sessions with our industry professionals.
Accessible Music: Leah, our incredibly talented musician, delivered an engaging and inspiring music workshop that captured the students’ attention and creativity. With her passion for music and deep industry knowledge, she provided a unique space for students to explore the production, marketing, and business side of the music industry. The session was hands-on and fun, giving students the chance to experiment with instruments, rhythm, collaborative music-making, recording and marketing. The workshop left many students feeling energised and newly inspired to pursue music as a potential pathway.
Medical Research: Mick, from the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research, provided students with a fascinating insight into the world of science, health, and innovation. Through interactive discussions and hands-on activities, students learned about the importance of scientific thinking, data analysis, and the role of research in improving global health outcomes. The workshop also highlighted various career pathways in the medical and research fields, encouraging students to consider how their interest in science could lead to exciting and meaningful careers in healthcare, biotechnology, or medical science.
Plumbing: The hands-on Basics of Plumbing workshop, led by Finnian, really captured the students’ interest. They were introduced to a range of essential plumbing tools and learned how to use them safely and effectively. Finnian shared practical tips and tricks that students could apply at home or in their community, helping them gain confidence in tackling everyday plumbing tasks. The workshop also covered the importance of water conservation and how responsible plumbing practices can make a significant difference to both the environment and household efficiency. More than just technical skills, the session encouraged independence, problem-solving, and resilience—giving students valuable knowledge they can use now and well into the future.
It was a pleasure visiting Shark Bay School.
