2025 | Term 2 | Week 9
The School of Isolated and Distance Education’s (SIDE) Mini Industry Roadshow (MiR) recently embarked on an exciting careers tour through the stunning Kimberley region of Western Australia, to visit Kalumburu Remote Community School. During this memorable trip, SIDE had the privilege of engaging with the community and bringing together students and professional trainers in a series of workshops across diverse fields, including marine biology, hospitality, and cabinetry.
Marine Biology: Gianna, a marine biologist who specialises in sharks, whale sharks, and orcas, led an engaging hands-on session exploring the wonders of our oceans. Students learned about the incredible diversity of marine life and the importance of keeping our waterways clean and healthy for the benefit of all living things. A key focus was the growing problem of microplastics and the impact these tiny pollutants have on both the environment and our daily lives. Students shared creative ideas on how to reduce, reuse, and recycle in their own communities. It was a fun, eye-opening experience that not only deepened their understanding of marine science but also highlighted the wide range of career paths connected to the ocean.
Hospitality: Bonnie ran a fun and energetic workshop that gave students a great look into the world of hospitality. Through a hands-on café simulation, they got to experience the fast pace of the industry while picking up important customer service skills and learning how to work well as a team. One of the highlights was trying out coffee-making, a fun and creative part of the session that everyone enjoyed.
Carpentry: Nathan from Cabinetry-in-Schools shared his knowledge about design, the importance of accuracy in construction, and the wide range of career opportunities in the trades. Students got hands-on experience using their creativity and woodwork skills to complete small take-home projects. They walked away with a better understanding of the industry and a sense of pride in what they built.
The hands-on sessions provided valuable insights, helping to broaden students' career prospects and spark new interests in these dynamic industries. Thank you for welcoming us to your community.
