2025 | Term 2 | Week 8
School of Isolated and Distance Education and the Mini Industry Roadshow had the pleasure of visiting Carnarvon Community College, where our trainers engaged the students in an array of practical hands-on skills attainment in professional rigging, marine biology, and hospitality. The sessions not only actively trained students in useful skills but also provided invaluable insights into various trades and potential future career pathways.
All Directions Performance and Rigging: Aidan introduced the students to the dynamic high-energy industry of professional rigging and construction. Students engaged in rope skills, working at heights, WHS for rigging, and teamwork skills. Students also explored pulleys, levers and other lifting systems, maths for rigging such as calculating weight distribution, safety awareness, communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to perform physical tasks. It was a terrific hands-on experience.
Hospitality: Bonnie ran a fun and energetic workshop that gave students a great look into the world of hospitality. Through a hands-on café simulation, they got to experience the fast pace of the industry while picking up important customer service skills and learning how to work well as a team. One of the highlights was trying out coffee shorthand—a fun and creative part of the session that everyone enjoyed.
Marine Biology: Gianna, a marine biologist who specialises in sharks, whale sharks, and orcas, led an engaging hands-on session exploring the wonders of our oceans. Students learned about the incredible diversity of marine life and the importance of keeping our waterways clean and healthy for the benefit of all living things. A key focus was the growing problem of microplastics and the impact these tiny pollutants have on both the environment and our daily lives. Students shared creative ideas on how to reduce, reuse, and recycle in their own communities. It was a fun, eye-opening experience that not only deepened their understanding of marine science but also highlighted the wide range of career paths connected to the ocean.
The Mini Industry Roadshow offered professional career advice that not only provided valuable insights into various industries but also inspired the students to think critically about their strengths, passions, and future goals. Thank you for having us, Carnarvon DHS.
