2025 | Term 2 | Week 1
The beautiful Pia Wadjarri Remote Community School is set in a unique natural environment surrounded by rocky hills, water holes, and brilliant skies. SIDE’s Mini Industry Roadshow had the pleasure of visiting this incredibly special school and conducting workshops that expand students’ practical knowledge while exploring career opportunities in the fields of hospitality, medical research, and electrical engineering.
Hospitality:
During the hospitality workshops with Bonnie, students gained valuable skills in customer service and team management. They enjoyed engaging in fun role-playing activities, which helped them apply what they learned in a practical setting. Additionally, they explored the art of coffee making, adding an exciting element to their experience.
Electrical Engineering:
Students developed practical skills in wiring, charging, and manipulating current in a fun and safe environment. Students worked with Blake to connect and correct circuit boards as well as power their own mini devices.
Harry Perkins Medical Research:
Students were offered the opportunity to step into the shoes of medical researchers, learning about innovative advancements in the field and engaging in fascinating activities on the future of medical research. The hands-on workshop captivated students as they worked collaboratively in a simulated laboratory to “find a cure.” This experience not only ignited a passion for science among the students but also broadened their horizons about potential career paths in the medical and healthcare industry.
Thank you for welcoming us into your community Pia Wadjarri. We had a wonderful time.
‘Hi Crystle,
Thank you again for bringing your workshop to our school. As always, I believe the day was a huge success and our students are still buzzing about it! I cannot emphasise enough the value in having a team willing to come out and work with our students here at Pia.
Your team is one of the only, if not the only careers driven groups that are willing to travel out to our school to work with the students on their home turf. Most of the time, we will need to drive to wherever events are being hosted, which means very early mornings and late nights for our students. So by the time they get there, they're too tired to really absorb all the information being thrown at them. But since you and your team travel out, we avoid that issue altogether, giving these kids the opportunity to really take in the possibilities they're being exposed to. I don't think any of our students had ever considered that they could get a job in the medical industry before that particular workshop, and now they're coming up to me saying they'd like to be nurses, doctors and more.
I'd also like to thank you and your team for being so flexible and willing to meet our students where they were at. It really does help them engage with the content and connect with the trainers.
Finally, I would like to extend a special thanks to Bonnie for her one-on-one support with Jayeleen, our Year 11 student. Jayeleen faces challenges engaging with school and has low attendance, but when she heard Bonnie would be returning, she made a particular effort to attend the workshop. This program consistently serves as one of the few initiatives that successfully encourages disengaged students to re-engage with school while developing their skills and practical knowledge. Since attending the roadshow last year, Jayeleen has been inspired to pursue a career in Hospitality. She has completed a Barista course and is preparing for a work placement at a local station. I truly believe your program was the spark that ignited her motivation, and I look forward to seeing how other students benefit from this experience.
We can't wait to see you again next year!’
