2025 | Term 1 | Week 7
SIDE’S Career Development was thrilled that we could take our successful Mini Industry Roadshow (MiR) to the Southwest region to visit Our Lady of Mercy College and Harvey District High School.
The visit offered students dynamic and interactive hands-on workshops in cabinetry, medical research, and hairdressing designed to develop practical skills while sparking curiosity and interest in various industry areas and future job opportunities.
Cabinetry: Nathan from Cabinetry-in-Schools ran an inspiring session where he shared his expertise in working with wood and design while emphasizing the critical role of precision and accuracy used in the construction industry. The diversity of career opportunities available through the trades sector was highlighted in this fun and fast-paced workshop. Students left the session not only with a deeper understanding of the industry but also with a sense of accomplishment, having completed a personalised take-home project.
Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research: Students were given the opportunity to step into the shoes of medical researchers, learning about innovative advancements in the field and engaging in fascinating activities on the future of medical research. The hands-on workshop captivated students as they worked collaboratively in a simulated laboratory to “find a cure.” This experience not only ignited a passion for science among the students but also broadened their horizons about potential career paths in the medical and healthcare industry.
Hairdressing/hair hygiene: Pauline demonstrated and explained the importance of hair and scalp hygiene, helping students understand the concept of keeping our hair clean for their overall health and self-confidence. For a touch of creative fun, Pauline shared her expertise by teaching students how to braid, colour wrap, add beadwork, and incorporate feathers as stylish adornments for hair designs.
A heartfelt thank you to Our Lady of Mercy College, Harvey District High School, and most importantly, to the inspiring and incredible students for warmly welcoming us and enthusiastically participating in the Mini Industry Roadshow.
