2025 | Term 1 | Week 5

The Wheatbelt region of Western Australia is a wonderful place with many attractions including nature reserves, museums, and historic towns. School of Isolated and Distance Education (SIDE) delivered its highly successful hands-on skills training workshops, the Mini Industry Roadshow, to Kulin District High School and Lake Grace District High School. SIDE was able to provide the students with three amazing industry professionals in the fields of cabinetry, hospitality, and hairdressing/hair hygiene.

Carpentry: Cabinetry-in-schools’ Nathan shared his knowledge of design and the importance of accuracy when working in the construction industry as well as the career opportunities in many trades areas. Students walked away with an understanding of the industry as well as small take-home projects using their artist ideas as well as their wood crafting skills.

Hairdressing/hair hygiene: Pauline demonstrated and explained the importance of hair and scalp hygiene, helping students understand the concept of keeping our hair clean. For a touch of creative fun, Pauline shared her expertise by teaching students how to braid, colour wrap, add beadwork, and incorporate feathers as stylish adornments for hair designs.

Hospitality: Bonnie delivered an engaging and dynamic workshop that captivated students, offering a deep dive into the opportunities within the hospitality industry. Through an interactive café simulation, participants got a firsthand look at the industry's fast pace while developing essential customer service skills and learning the value of teamwork. The workshop also included an enjoyable introduction to the craft of coffee service, adding a creative and fun element to the experience.

The Mini Industry Roadshow’s tour of the Wheatbelt was a tremendous success, sparking students’ interest in exploring potential career paths and offering valuable insights through direct industry engagement.
