SIDE’s Career Department was thrilled that we could take our highly successful Mini Industry Roadshow (MiR) to the Southwest region to visit Nannup District High School and Pemberton District High School. The area is renowned for its breathtaking scenery, enveloped by the towering Karri and Jarrah hardwood trees, the tallest of their kind.

This is where SIDE had the pleasure of visiting and bringing a series of hands-on experiences with interactive learning, and an invaluable glimpse into potential careers.

We delivered practical workshops that explored three different industry areas including:

Hospitality: Bonnie captivated students with a lively and interactive role-playing workshop, highlighting the immense opportunities within the hospitality industry. Through a high-energy café simulation, students experienced the fast-paced nature of the field while honing their professional customer service skills and understanding the critical importance of teamwork. The workshop also featured an engaging introduction to the art of coffee making, adding a creative and enjoyable dimension to their learning experience.

Cabinetry: The Cabinetry-in-Schools session by Nathan was an inspiring and immersive experience, where Nathan shared his expertise in design, emphasizing the critical role of precision and accuracy in the construction industry. He also explained the diverse career opportunities available in the construction industry. Students left the session with a deeper understanding of the industry as well as a personalised take-home project.

Plumbing:  Ella’s hands-on workshop ‘Basic Skills in Plumbing’ was a wonderful introduction to the industry. The workshop took students through fun discovery learning activities that had them exploring essential plumbing tools, pipe fitting, leak detection and repair, safety practices, and water pressure management. Students also gained valuable insights on water conservation and other responsible home practices. Teaching students to be self-reliant, resilient, and capable of handling basic plumbing tasks will benefit them both now and in the future.

The Southwest Mini Industry Roadshow was a resounding success, inspiring students to consider their future career possibilities and providing them with expert industry engagement.
