SIDE’S Mini Industry Roadshow recently embarked on an exciting careers tour to the picturesque Gascoyne region of Western Australia, visiting Burringurrah Remote Community School. The area around Mount Augustus is the traditional lands of the Wajarri and Burringurrah is the Wajarri name for Mount Augustus. Mount Augustus is one of the most spectacular solitary peaks and the world’s largest monocline. This is where the SIDE trainers were privileged to visit and conduct hands-on workshops in the fields of marine biology, hospitality and rigging.
Hospitality: Bonnie engaged the students in a fun role playing workshop which introduced the students to the enormous potential of the hospitality industry. The students engaged the high-paced activities that simulating a busy café environment. They learned how to use customer service skills in a professional manner and the importance of working within a team. Additionally, they explored the art of coffee making, adding an exciting element to their experience.
Marine Biology: Gianna who specialises in sharks, whale sharks, and orcas conducted a hands-on discovery session about what students can find on a beach and the importance of maintaining clean and healthy waterways for the benefit of all life on earth. The students explored how microplastics are a major concern for our environment and the impact the microscopic material has on our lives. The students contributed their ideas on how to reuse, reduce, recycle in their communities. It was a fun and informative learning experience for the students.
Rigging: Aidan from All Directions Performance and Rigging showed the students the dynamic high-energy industry of professional rigging, through engaging in rope skills, working at heights, WHS (Work Health and Safety) for rigging and teamwork safety. Aiden gave the students a fascinating look into one of the fastest growing industries and helped students understand the widespread career opportunities to which it can lead.
