2024 | Term 4 | Week 2
SIDE’s Career Department was thrilled that we could take our highly successful Mini Industry Roadshow (MiR) to the Pilbara region to visit Yandeyarra Remote Community School and Nullagine Primary School. SIDE was able to provide authentic industry standard firsthand learning experiences to the students.
The roadshow delivered a series of interactive learning experiences and an invaluable glimpse into potential careers in different industries. SIDE’S Mini Industry Roadshow continues to focus on our commitment to delivering educational opportunities to remote and regional communities all over Western Australia.
We delivered practical workshops that explored three different industry areas:
Carpentry: Cabinetry-in-schools’ Nathan shared his knowledge of design and the importance of accuracy when working in the construction industry as well as the career opportunities in many trades areas. Students walked away with an understanding of the industry as well as small take home projects using their artist ideas as well as their wood crafting skills.
Hairdressing/hair hygiene: Pauline demonstrated and explained the importance of hair and scalp hygiene, helping students understand the concept of keeping our hair clean. For a touch of creative fun, Pauline shared her expertise by teaching students how to braid, colour wrap, add beadwork, and incorporate feathers as stylish adornments for hair designs.
Rigging: Aidan from All Directions Performance and Rigging introduced the students to the dynamic high-energy industry of professional rigging and the widespread career opportunities to which it can lead. In his workshop, Aidan explained how pulleys, levers, and other lifting systems work, how mathematics such as calculating weight distribution and distance measurement play a large role in the industry, and how safety awareness, being clear with communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to perform physical tasks are necessary for this career pathway.
Thank you, Yandeyarra Remote Community School, and Nullagine Primary School, for welcoming us, we thoroughly enjoyed visiting your school.
