The Mini Industry Roadshow recently visited the Pilbara region of Western Australia taking the career workshop and SIDE trainers to visit Jigalong Remote Community School and Tom Price Senior High School.
The Jigalong Remote Community School and its community buildings are nestled in the heart of the people with its day-to-day operations permeating the broader routines of the Martu People who have maintained strong traditional ties with both their culture and land. Tom Price which is the highest town in Western Australia is situated on the edge of the Hamersley Ranges at the foot of Mount Nameless or Jarndunmunha as referred to by the local people meaning, ‘wallabies live near here’.

Students at both schools had the opportunity to explore various industries and career pathways that they might not have otherwise considered;
Entrepreneurship; Morgan James from Ricochet shared the intricacies of designing, implementing and successfully running a business. Encouraged to think creatively, the students had an opportunity to fulfill their dreams and passions for their future careers by applying skills learnt to design a business of their own.
Electrical Engineering; Blake Chase highlighted in his workshop the wide spread applications of electrical engineering in the world of work. This workshop provided valuable technical skills learning and explored the crucial role of trades for regional communities.
Hospitality; Interpersonal skills relevant to the hospitality industry including communication and teamwork were explored by Bonnie Blewitt. Students learned how to greet customers, deliver, and take orders as well as seeing the importance of being able to work in a team.
The Mini Industry Roadshow was an outstanding success. Thank you to the staff, and students of Jigalong and Tom Price for welcoming us once again.
All of the students really enjoyed the day. I don’t think the value of having people from outside come and demonstrate the potential opportunities available can be overstated. Our students live in such a tiny bubble.
