SIDE were fortunate to be able to take the Mini Industry Roadshow to Christmas Island and Cocos Islands District High Schools through the generous funding of the Department of Training and Workforce Development and the Commonwealth Government.
The Roadshow delivered a series of hands-on experiences with interactive learning and an invaluable glimpse into potential careers while reinforcing SIDE’s commitment to delivering educational opportunities to remote and regional communities all over Western Australia.
We delivered practical workshops that explored three different industry areas including:
Arts: the exploration of skills and career opportunities in the arts industry and the work of makeup and stage character design across a range of industry areas facilitated by Crystle Challinger from SIDE.
Trades: cabinetry in school session when Nathan shared his knowledge of design and the importance of accuracy when working in the carpentry industry as well the career opportunities in many trades areas. Students walked away with an understanding of the industry as well as a small take-home project. Using their artist ideas as well as their wood crafting skills.
Hospitality: Interpersonal skills relevant to the hospitality industry including communication and teamwork were introduced by Bonnie. Students learned how to greet customers, deliver, and take orders as well as seeing the importance of being able to work in a team.
Thank you to the students and staff from Christmas Island and Cocos Island District High Schools. SIDE is thoroughly honoured to be allowed to bring the Mini Industry Roadshow to the Indian Ocean Territory schools.

SIDE greatly appreciates the feedback we have received.
The dust has settled since the SIDE visit to Cocos Islands DHS and after chatting with the students since, I would just like to express my thanks to you, the other presenters Bonnie and Nathan, and to SIDE for what I would call a resoundingly successful couple of days.
Our Years 6-9 students have also mentioned how much they enjoyed the way in which the Mini-Roadshow sessions were both informative and hands-on. There was certainly discussion amongst parental groups outside of school asking me how often SIDE come up and do these days as the kids came home positive from the day. I personally have my youngest son making coffees at home, taking orders, and completing the process.
Our staff, who were moving around with the students have also said how much they observed the students participating in the sessions and the amount of fun they were having. Additionally, the staff that had professional learning sessions with SIDE presenters, as well as discussions with the principal about potential prospective interactions have all contributed to the future enrichment of the school for all, even those not directly involved in the events.
Overall, I would personally like to thank you for the way in which everything worked out. Dealing with the SIDE team in the lead-up, even prioritising the program over personal luggage (sorry that you had your bags offloaded) shows the level of professionalism and dedication that you have.
I do hope that we can continue to build on this relationship going forward.
