Year 12 Achievement Awards 2015

is presented for a studio piece created by a graduating student. The prize of $200 will be awarded by Principal of SIDE to the winning student on the condition that the chosen work will be available for display at SIDE, Leederville, for a period of two years. After this time the work can be collected by the student. The recipient will be selected by the Principal.

Jessica Lambert

Jessica has been with SIDE for 2 years while living in the United States. With almost 100% attendance, she has not let the time difference get in the way of her Art lessons and discussions. She has on occasion not been able to speak very loudly but this was due to the fact that her parents were fast asleep.

Jessica recently submitted a detailed 12-page document stating her intentions and motivations for her final artwork for 2015. This was for a task only worth 5% that required 3 pages, which gives an idea of Jessica’s passion for Art and the drive she has in planning her complex and ingenious visual ideas. She came to SIDE with an already high level of artistic talent and now leaves us more rounded with greater knowledge and understanding of the Arts tempered with stronger direction and self-expression. Congratulations, Jessica.

Corey Plowman

Corey Plowman began studying at SIDE in 2013 after being home schooled for a number of years while travelling with his family around Australia. Settling in Hopetoun in the Great Southern region of WA, Corey has since excelled in all his ATAR courses, also winning the SIDE Year 12 awards for Physics and Automotive Engineering at SIDE. Corey’s teachers describe him as an exceptional independent learner. Corey says the SIDE style of teaching and learning suited him well, and that he has enjoyed being “self-driven, to study whenever I want, for as long as I want”. Further to this, Corey’s teachers say that he has been very well organised, completed all set tasks on time and sought support as well as feedback when necessary, always applying it to improve his understandings, knowledge and skills. Added to this mix, a constant striving for excellence has contributed to his achievement of Academic Dux of SIDE for 2015 and also the Curtin’s Principal’s Recommendation Award.

Outside his studies, Corey has a variety of interests including playing the piano and a love of nature. He also has a passion for astronomy which coupled with the ATAR courses he studied in Maths and the Sciences have led him to set his sights on studying Astrophysics at Curtin University in 2016. Corey acknowledges that home schooling prepared him well for SIDE and despite initial doubts, he says that the support and availability of his teachers have been “really impressive” at SIDE. He is genuinely appreciative of this and in turn, we congratulate Corey of his tremendous achievement and wish him the best for his future studies.

The ADF Long Tan Youth Leadership and Teamwork Awards recognise students who demonstrate leadership and teamwork within both the school and the broader community and who display strong values, such as doing one's best, respect for others and "mateship", that are integral to Australian society.

Awards recipients must be enrolled in the school nominating the winner for the year in which the award is presented. Awards recipients must be Australian citizens or permanent residents of Australia.

Damien Fyfe

Damian is an elite swimmer who has been studying with SIDE for the past 18 months. He was awarded a Western Australian Institute of Sport (WAIS) scholarship in 2013 and has been combining his education and intense training/competition program during this time.

Damian recently represented Australia in the Junior World Championships in Singapore. Damian’s highly developed leadership and team work skills were recognised when he was selected as captain of this 30 athlete team.

He has demonstrated high levels of cooperation, resourcefulness and communication to maintain his ATAR pathway and achieve outstanding results in the pool.

Damian’s commitment to his sport is commendable and SIDE is proud to support and recognise his efforts.

Tyler Brooks

Tyler began studying at SIDE mid-way through Year 11 in 2014 and completed her Year 12 studies in 2015 sitting ATAR exams for English, Maths, Geography, Health Studies and Modern History. She previously attended Southern Cross DHS and even though she studied via SIDE, she continued to play an active part in her local community through her involvement in sports teams and work at the town’s swimming pool. Tyler’s SIDE teachers have described her as a vivacious, mature, determined and dedicated student who always strives to achieve the best results.

Tyler’s teachers have also found her to be an extremely committed and respectful student exhibiting a deep sense of self-awareness and consideration of those around her. She always interacted positively with her teachers and peers, often showing encouragement and her appreciation for ideas they had shared and extending this to discussion forums on Moodle.

Finally, Tyler is remembered as a student who stayed on schedule, worked autonomously and was a regular attendee of Saba lessons in spite of her isolation in Southern Cross. Another impressive attribute was her willingness to act upon feedback which was reflected in the improvement of her results. It was this commitment to excellence in her studies which makes Tyler a worthy recipient of this award. SIDE is extremely proud to support and recognise her efforts.

It has been presented to thousands of final-year students, acknowledging their all-round contributions to their schools and communities. The chosen student excels in many aspects including academic, attitude, personal conduct, leadership and service.

Tyler Brooks

Tyler began studying at SIDE mid-way through Year 11 in 2014 and completed her Year 12 studies in 2015, sitting ATAR exams for English, Maths, Geography, Health Studies and Modern History. She previously attended Southern Cross DHS and is remembered by the school for her all-round abilities as required by this award. Tyler also won the North Metropolitan Commitment to Excellence Award where her all past and present teachers described her academic achievement, attitude to others and personal conduct as exemplary. Other attributes include an extremely focussed and intrinsically driven attitude to her studies and interests. Her teachers describe her as a perfect role model who approaches all aspects of school with a smile and a willingness to give her best. It is agreed that Tyler is also an outstanding leader and well respected by all students and staff alike. A strong awareness of equality and human rights has led her to study Paramedicine at Curtin University in 2016.

In terms of service to her community, Tyler volunteers for the Southern Cross DHS and P&C events, school sport carnivals, and has been involved in all sporting clubs in Southern Cross through coaching (netball and basketball), umpiring, participating in canteen duties and game scoring. She was also school Sports Captain in Year 10, representing her school in athletics, cross country and netball.

Over the years, Tyler was selected as a representative to attend the Leeuwin Leadership Camp and Sir Charles Court Young Leaders Program. She was also a student Councillor at Southern Cross DHS receiving top achievement awards and the Patroni Scholarship in Year 10. Her all-round abilities also include achieving a Bronze Medallion and Volunteer Lifeguarding for swimming events and carnivals. She was also a member of the Yilgarn Young Entertainer Drama Club. SIDE is proud to have had a student such as Tyler and she in turn should be proud of her efforts. We wish her every success in the future.

Sam Bennett

Sam is a hardworking Accounting and Finance student who always works to the best of his abilities. His online lesson attendance is excellent and he contributes well to lessons by working through the set questions with confidence. His examination results have been outstanding and show that he is prepared to put in time during the year to revise each of the topics thoroughly. I would like to congratulate him on his efforts over the past two years.

James Moulden

James is a dedicated student who has thrived in his Economics studies at SIDE this year. He demonstrated a self-driven desire to learn and succeed. He always attended Saba lessons and engaged in mature discussions on the economic content. James’s confidence in Economics saw him achieve the highest exam results in both semesters and the highest result for the year in our Year 12 Economics class. James is to be commended for his efforts in Year 12 Economics this year and I wish him all the best for the future.

Keaton Staszewski-Hose

Keaton has had a very impressive year with a sustained high level of achievement. He is a polite, articulate, and hard-working student who shows maturity beyond his years. Through his assessments and oral discussion he has shown a very high level of understanding of the course. He has an impressive vocabulary and uses it with definitude. Keaton has the skills, confidence and determination to excel in his chosen path.

Cassandra Monks

Cassandra Monks has been enrolled at SIDE since July 2012 and in her final year has demonstrated excellent engagement in her learning by regularly attending her weekly Saba lessons whilst overcoming the challenges of assisting her family with the running of their farm. There have been frequent connectivity issues and problems with her software, though due to her persistence she has overcome these and has managed to continue her lessons. Cassandra displays a positive attitude towards all aspects of her learning, attending extra online lessons to boost her skills. Towards the end of Term 3 Cassandra drove the three hour trip to Perth to meet with her teachers so she could complete her Term 3 work and gain extra tuition to help her to complete her courses for Year 12. Cassandra shows persistence in overcoming problems and displays a positive attitude towards life and her learning. I wish her the very best for the future.

Taylah Hazell

Taylah commenced studies as a Year 10 student in 2014. Over the last two years she has demonstrated a strong interest in her home and school communities. In Year 10 she volunteered at the local primary school, assisting in the classroom and during Year 11 she gave time each Thursday to work at a crèche so the mothers could commit to yoga classes. Whilst studying ADWPL she worked in a variety of positions and received glowing reports regarding her dedication and attitude. Taylah is also truly valued by her family: she assists her mother and her father with her five siblings by helping around the house and the farm. Taylah is a polite, thoughtful andconsideratestudent and a worthy recipient of the Citizenship Award.

Jessica Lambert

Jessica is living in Evans, Georgia, in the USA and has been studying with SIDE since Semester 2 in 2014. The 13 hour time difference between Evans and Perth has often presented challenges in restricting Jessica’s access to her online classes and contact with her teachers. Despite this, Jessica has successfully completed an ATAR pathway program and achieved commendable results in all of her courses.

Jessica has achieved the SIDE Year 12 Visual Arts course prize and the SIDE Principal’s Art award. She has proven to be a hard-working, conscientious student throughout her time at SIDE. She even attended an online TICS information session at 2.30am (US time) to ensure she understood the university application process – a sign of a very committed and diligent student!

Tahnee Lyons

Tahnee has consistently shown a strong talent in both the production and analysis of media texts. She has consistently engaged enthusiastically and intelligently in discussions about the role the media plays in society and culture and these insights have resulted in impressive coursework and exam results.

The determination and creativity Tahnee showed in her role as cinematographer in her WACE Practical Production saw her and her collaborative partner submit an exceptional Art Film, which has been entered for the 2015 ATOMWA Media Perspectives Award.

Luke Shunmugam

Luke’s editing talents have seen him produce sophisticated and original media works that demonstrate a strong sense of personal style. He showcased these skills in his WACE Practical Production, creating an Art film, true to the noir style but innovative in its narrative and aesthetic approach. Produced in collaboration with this year’s Media Award winner, Luke’s Art film has been entered for the 2015 ATOMWA Media Perspectives Award.

Mitchell Bell

Mitchell enrolled with SIDE this year as a medical referral in order to complete his Year 12 studies. Mitchell had significant interruption to his Year 11 studies and moved to Perth in January for medical treatment. Despite being away from home and friends, juggling appointments, medications and undergoing treatment, Mitchell proved himself to be a consistent and dedicated student. Mitchell did not ask for extensions but just did his best to catch up when he was well.

Mitchell went into hospital in July and then was back into his studies as soon as he was able, sitting his mock WACE exams in hospital eight weeks later. Mitchell is a delightful and determined young man who has taken all these challenges in his stride and is a worthy recipient of this award.

Chantelle Joubert

Chantelle enrolled with SIDE at the beginning of this year. Following the birth of her baby in May, she successfully managed to juggle the challenges of being a parent with the demands of her SIDE studies. She impressed her SIDE teachers with her organisational skills, her self-motivation and her positive and proactive approach to her studies.

She is to be congratulated on her achievements this year and we wish her all the best for her future studies.

Lia Bannister

Lia has willingly taken on the challenges of being a home based student at SIDE in a mature and confident manner. Lia is a dedicated learner who achieved exceptional results in Visual Arts because of the meticulous manner in which she undertook her work and her ability to solve problems. She eagerly seeks new and more challenging tasks to extend her skills and knowledge and has taken pride in all work submissions, completing them to the best of her ability. We wish Lia all the best in her future endeavours.

Emily Jones

Emily has taken on the challenges of being a home based student at SIDE in a mature and confident manner. Emily has had a positive approach to all her work tasks and has developed strong relationships with people in a collaborative and effective manner. Emily has great expectations of herself and has shown great initiative in setting out to achieve her goals. She acts responsibly as a representative of SIDE in a workplace environment, responds well to feedback and is very supportive of others. Her humility and concern for others is exceptional. Emily has an excellent attitude, sets very high standards for herself and is a terrific role model to others.

Keeley McWhirter

Keeley has completed his Year 11 and 12 courses through SIDE with excellent results. He has applied himself and worked well via the online distance mode; displaying a motivated, enthusiastic and positive attitude to his studies. At school he has been a fine role model and supportive of his classmates, assisting them with their SIDE courses. Keeley has been a model student whose hard work and dedication makes him thoroughly deserving of this award. We wish Keeley every success in his university studies and future career.

Grace Underwood

Grace has been the only ATAR Year 12 in her school community of Mukinbudin this year. Her natural leadership skills, mature attitude and friendly personality made her the natural leader of the Senior School Students at Mukinbudin. Grace is a delightful and generous young person who has willingly shared her knowledge with others in her Saba classes, been conscientious and diligent in her studies through SIDE, and demonstrated an exceptional attitude and work ethic. Her willingness to help others will see Grace travel to Nepal at the end of the year after the success of a previous trip to India. We wish Grace all the best with her future ambitions to work in education.

Taneika Jefferies

Taneika Jefferies is from Quairading District High School and has completed her Year 11 and 12 courses through SIDE displaying excellent organisation skills and self-motivation, which has led to commendable results in her studies. Other attributes mentioned by her teachers include her timely work submission and positive interaction in online classes with her teachers and peers. Taneika has also achieved outstanding results in her Workplace Learning Program and on-the-job training where she completed many hours of service and a number of programs. She has been completing a School Based Traineeship, specifically a Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care to help qualify her to work in the field. As part of this program and qualification, Taneika has already completed many hours in the local child care centre. She is a most deserving recipient of this award and we wish her every success in her future studies and career.

Kailey Butler

Kailey, a student from Exmouth District High School, has completed a number of Year 12 courses through SIDE, and has achieved excellent results in Health Studies, English and Maths. She has displayed determination and clear understanding to consistently submit work of a very high standard. Kailey was also adjusted well to the distance learning mode to become a solid, independent learner. She slowly gained in confidence as the year progressed and has shown great maturity and persistence in seeking to gain alternative entry into University. She is thoroughly deserving of this award and SIDE wishes her every success in her university studies and future career.
