SIDE's Mini Industry Roadshow recently launched an exciting careers tour through the scenic Kimberley region of Western Australia. The Kimberley is a vast and remote region known for its rugged and natural beauty, unique biodiversity, and rich Aboriginal culture.
For two weeks the MIR embarked on an extensive educational tour to six remote communities: Looma Remote Community School, Fitzroy Valley District High School, Wangkatjungka Remote Community School, Purnululu School, East Kimberley College, and Wyndham District High School.
Fitzroy Valley District High School
This tour was an extremely valuable experience for both the students involved well as our specialised industry trainers. The tour offered unique cultural and community perspectives that our trainers incorporated into the opportunities for students to experience hands-on skills sessions.
Hospitality: Bonnie Blewitt engaged the students in a fun role-playing workshop by introducing the students to the enormous potential of the hospitality industry. The students engaged in the high-paced activity simulating a busy café environment. They learned how to use customer service skills in a professional manner and the importance of working within a team.
Electrical Engineering: Blake Chase excited and impressed the students with his knowledge of electrical engineering and its practical use in the high-risk worlds of motorsports. Students developed practical skills in connecting and correcting circuit boards as well as powering their own mini devices. Blake also spoke to the students about skydiving, highlighting the key requirements such as mental alertness, the ability to follow directions, and heightened self-awareness, both individually and in relation to others – skills that are highly transferrable to other industries.
Plumbing: Ella Norton's hands-on workshop 'Basics of Plumbing' enthralled the students. They learned about essential plumbing tools, how to use them effectively, valuable tips and tricks they can use in their communities, and gained insights on water conservation and other responsible practices. Ella's workshop teaching students to be independent, strong, and able to manage simple plumbing issues will be helpful for both now and in the future.

Wyndham District High School
The Mini Industry Roadshow was able to spend time building relationships with the young people while incorporating learning opportunities in social and community activities by acknowledging existing strengths and interests in the community. Thank you to the students from Looma RCS, Fitzroy Valley DHS, Wangkatjungka RCS, Purnululu School, East Kimberley College, and Wyndham DHS, we thoroughly enjoyed our time visiting your school.
