SIDE’S Career Department was thrilled that we could take our highly successful Mini Industry Roadshow (MiR) to Yandeyarra Remote School, Marble Bar Primary School and Nullagine Primary School all situated in the beautiful Pilbara region of Western Australia. The Pilbara region has some of the world’s most stunning ancient natural landscapes dating back 3.5-4.3 billion years.
Marble Bar Primary School
The SIDE Mini Industry Roadshow delivered a series of hands-on experiences with interactive learning, and an invaluable glimpse into potential careers while reinforcing SIDE’S commitment to delivering educational opportunities to remote and regional communities all over Western Australia.
Nullagine Primary School
We delivered practical workshops that explored three different industry areas including:
Construction: Nathan Kell from Cabinetry-in-schools shared his knowledge of design and the importance of accuracy in trades. Nathan helped students master their hand skills as well understand the many career opportunities available in the construction industry. Students walked away with a greater understanding of the wood working skills as well as a small take home project of their design.
Plumbing: Ella Norton captivated the classes with her hands-on workshops which incorporates learning the basics of plumbing, teamwork skills essential to trades, and the importance of water conservation. The workshop taught students how to manage simple plumbing issues while also giving them some expert tips and techniques to help expand their knowledge in this trade.
Hospitality: Students had a great time learning the people skills relevant to the hospitality industry including communication and teamwork. Our expert trainer, Bonnie Blewitt taught students the professional methods used to greet customers, deliver multiple types of service, take orders, and work in a high-pressure workplace.
Thank you to the students and staff from Yandeyarra RCS, Marble Bar PS and Nullagine PS for welcoming us to your schools. We thoroughly enjoyed our time in your communities, and we hope the workshops left you feeling inspired, informed, and excited about different career choices, options, and future pathways.
Yandeyarra Remote School
The SIDE Mini Industry Roadshow has visited Yandeyarra two years in the time that I’ve been principal and I see this program as an ongoing part of how we provide meaningful career and vocational pathways for our older students.
The timing of the visit is very suitable for us as they work in with our term planner and other things that are happening to find a date that is suitable for everybody and fills the need for our older students in our remote location who do not have easy access to information and the hands-on experience and understanding of the breath of career choices out there. These visits by Crystle and her highly skilled and motivated team certainly fulfilled this need.
I find the structure of the visit to be highly responsive to the needs of our students all of which are from aboriginal families in the community. The sessions are hands-on and highly adaptable to the students who are present on the day and the team focus in on students individual needs and interests which is highly commendable. There are currently no other groups or organisations who provide onsite vocational programs to our students.
As a school, we highly value the annual visits and the opportunities it presents to our students. It also provides ideas to our staff that we can then use and further develop throughout the year.
I would highly recommend this program to any interested school.’
