Tjuntjuntjara Remote Community School is located in the Tjuntjuntjara Community. It is situated in the Great Victorian Desert close to the border with South Australia, north of the Nullarbor Plain and 630 kilometres north-east of Kalgoorlie, it is considered to be one of the most remote communities in Australia. This where The Mini Industry Roadshow had the pleasure of visiting in Term 3, 2024 along with SIDE’s amazing professional trainers.

We delivered hands-on skills training workshops in the fields of carpentry and cabinet making, rigging for mining and performance, hospitality, and stage makeup.

Hospitality: Bonnie Blewitt explained the importance of communication and enthusiasm when employed in a service environment. Students also learnt valuable people skills, problem-solving, adaptability and organisation strategies used in a café and restaurant environment. The students got a shorthand version of ‘everything coffee,’ and had the opportunity to practice their skills in customer service through role play activities.

All Directions Performance and Rigging: Aidan Bayliss showed the students the dynamic high-energy industry of professional rigging, through engaging in rope skills, working at heights, WHS (Work Health and Safety) for rigging and teamwork safety. Aiden gave the students such a fascinating look into one of the fastest growing industries and helped students understand the widespread career opportunities to which it can lead.

Cabinetry & Carpentry: Nathan Kell from Carpentry-in-Schools engaged students with a hands-on experience of the skills he utilises to create beautiful pieces of art and furniture from wood. The students learnt industry standard techniques, knowledge of wood, saws, nails, and other tools whilst sneaking in one or two especially important mathematics and history lessons that fascinated and inspired the students. Carpentry-in-Schools was exciting for the students as they learnt to create with wood under expert guidance while gaining an understanding of the career pathways in this industry.

Beauty: SIDE’s amazing makeup workshop gave students a wonderful experience of how creative and expressive they could be in their future career. The students had so much fun learning how to colour mix and experiencing how makeup can alter and change appearances. Our SIDE trainer showed students the importance of effective hygiene practices, how applying make can be different for each person, and how using products and brushes also strengthens and assists development fine motor skills which are all transferrable to other industries. It was a fun hands-on workshop which everyone enjoyed. SIDE also donated a full kit of makeup, paints, brushes and disinfecting products to the school so the students can continue to practice their skills.

The Mini Industry Roadshow was an outstanding success leaving students curious and informed and excited about their future career pathways. Thank you to the students and staff from Tjuntjuntjara, we absolutely enjoyed visiting your school and community.
