PLEASE NOTE: Year 11 & 12 Enrolments for 2024 have closedSIDE’s Referral Program provides short-term support for students whose school attendance has been severely impacted.

Enrolment in the program is a short-term alternative to regular schooling. Students in Pre Primary - Year 10 need to be working towards re-engagement to their current school or an alternative program. Eligible students will be enrolled for a trial period.

  • What circumstances constitute suitable for SIDE enrolment?
    • severe medical/chronic health conditions
    • severe mental health conditions
    • pregnancy or parenting responsibilities
  • How do I know if a student might be eligible?
    • If the student is unable to attend school at all (or an alternative program) for an extended period, generally three months or more, AND
    • The student is engaged in ongoing and regular counselling, specialist treatment or other appropriate intervention.

    The student’s treating clinician or specialist will be consulted to assist in establishing eligibility and to determine whether the SIDE program is suitable for the student. Documentation will be requested following the consultation.

  • Enrolment information
    • Eligible students in Pre-Primary - Year 10, remain enrolled in their school while accessing SIDE’s Referral Program. SIDE works in partnership with the student’s current school. Please be aware that if the student is enrolled in a Non-Government school there are charges associated with the school partnership. This information is available on SIDE's website.
    • Students in Years 11-12 enrolling in SIDE’s Referral Program generally transfer to SIDE at the beginning of Semester 1 or 2 as a CURRENT student.

SIDE is an online school and the government provider of K-12 distance education in Western Australia.

To apply to enrol, a student must be a resident of Western Australia and an approved Australian resident. There is a minimum enrolment period of at least 20 school weeks or one Western Australian school semester and students must be of compulsory school age. Each student’s enrolment eligibility is regularly reviewed.

Eligibility criteria and required documentation will vary, depending on the enrolment category. The following categories contain guidelines for determining enrolment eligibility. Application enrolment links can be found on each category page.

Students continuing with SIDE must confirm re-enrolment with their Regional Coordinator and complete the appropriate forms.

  • Home Based
    This category covers students who are:
    • enrolled full-time in a registered dance/ballet school
    • involved in elite performance including sport, theatre and music
    • geographically isolated
    • planning to live overseas temporarily and not enrolled at an overseas school
    • planning to travel within Australia temporarily but still enrolled at a WA school.

  • School Based
    Students for whom their base school cannot provide an appropriate course.
    This category covers situations where:
    • specialist teachers are not available
    • students transfer between schools
    • there are timetabling constraints within a school.

  • Referral Program
    Students can apply to enrol with SIDE through the Referral Program. This Program is coordinated by SIDE’s school psychologists and is designed to provide support for students who are unable to attend a regular school due to:
    • severe medical/chronic health problems
    • severe mental health issues
    • pregnancy or parenting responsibilities.

Other Applicants

Students, who do not fit any of the above categories, may still apply to enrol with SIDE. To do so, they need to gain approval from their relevant Regional Executive Director, who will then liaise with the Principal of SIDE.

The final decision regarding eligibility is made by the Principal of SIDE.
