STUDENTS       DOE STAFF

It is a School Curriculum and Standards Authority requirement that all students wishing to study a WACE language course obtain permission to enrol in that course in the year prior to first enrolment in the course. Second language courses are for students who have typically learnt everything they know about a second language and its culture through classroom teaching in Australia.

Applications for permission to enrol in 2025 were due to SCSA by 23 August 2024. Information about these requirements is available on the SCSA website . SIDE is required to confirm eligibility before enrolling students in WACE language courses.

Application already submitted to SCSA

Schools may check on the outcome of applications submitted to SCSA by downloading report CSE 208 from SIRS. If approval has been obtained, please forward a screenshot of the report showing the student’s name and course.

Application not yet submitted to SCSA

If you have not yet obtained approval from SCSA for the student to enrol in a WACE Year 11 or 12 Language Course, please ensure the student completes an application form which is accessed on the SCSA website and which requires supporting documentation

  • The application form and guidelines for completing the form are accessed from the SCSA website .
  • There is both a school guide and a student guide for online applications.
  • The application form includes sections to be completed by the student, a parent/carer and a teacher from your school. The completed form must be endorsed by the principal.
  • The Authority will process the online applications and determine a student’s WACE language course enrolment status. Students will see this determination in the student portal, and it will be reflected in SIRS.
  • Note: Please contact SCSA for any queries regarding the application process.

SIDE provides students with the opportunity to study subjects not offered at their base school. While students remain enrolled at their base school, they register with SIDE for individual subjects as required.

This arrangement applies in circumstances such as:

  • the unavailability of specialist teachers
  • student transitions between schools
  • timetabling constraints within a school

Where students have special circumstances and needs, they may be eligible for our Referral Program

Enrolment is dependent upon:

  • SIDE’s capacity to deliver the course
  • the base school determining the level of student access to SIDE that is appropriate

All schools enrolling students with SIDE must adhere to the conditions set out in the School Partnerships – Service Provision document.

Schools are also required to appoint a SIDE Supervisor to assist students with the management of their learning program.

Lesson arrangements:

  • The SIDE Timetable should be consulted to select available Webex lesson times
  • Webex lessons are conducted twice per week for each subject/course

Student Health Summary

To ensure we support your students effectively, SIDE requires a Student Health Care Summary for any student with a health condition, disability, or medical concern.

A separate form must be submitted for each enrolled SIDE student at your school with a health condition, disability, or medical concern. It’s quick to complete and asks for basic details such as the student’s name, year level, school region, school name, and information about specific health conditions, disabilities, or medical needs.
