STUDENTS       DOE STAFF

While most of the SIDE community have had a smooth start to Term 2, some families and students in the North and Mid-West are having a very difficult time as a result of the damage caused by Cyclone Seroja.

Many students in the affected area have lost access to resources required for learning including textbooks, print materials, internet and school resources. SIDE staff are busily contacting students to check how we can best provide support.

At our Leederville campus, SIDE teachers commenced work on Monday 19 April, setting up for a busy Term 2, and attending Professional Learning. Guest presenters from Statewide Services conducted two sessions. The first was by Jocinta Russon, School Psychologist at Carine Senior High School, who conducted a Q-and-A session on gender diversity and inclusiveness. Melissa Hopkins and Rubi Mabrouk, from the Literacy and Numeracy team presented the second session, focussing on English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D) and the opportunities and challenges encountered by EAL/D students in our classes. Special guests in the afternoon were Gina Williams and Guy Ghouse who informed and entertained staff using Noongar language and song. It was a demanding, stimulating day that ended with collaborative discussions on future directions at SIDE.
