STUDENTS       DOE STAFF

Congratulations to SIDE Year 12 student Cheri Van Rensburg who has been selected to attend the 2019 July Curtin AHEAD with Confidence Camp.

Cheri studies with SIDE because her parents’ work requires them to move around regional Australia. When Cheri was thinking about her post-school options she wanted to apply for Curtin University. She felt, however, that she lacked confidence about attending university. While looking at the Curtin website she found a camp for students from regional areas which she thought could assist her, so she applied to attend.

In 2019 Curtin University received triple the number of 2018 applications for the camp, which highlights Cheri’s achievement in being selected. The Curtin team assessed each applicant using their written application, a phone interview and the SIDE Student Coordinator’s written reference.

The Curtin AHEAD camp is a week-long camp for 22 selected current Year 12 ATAR students moving to Perth to pursue their university studies after high school. The camp aims to equip participants with essential skills, developing confidence in the transition to university, and building resilience and self-esteem. The program includes ATAR revision seminars, individual career pathway planning, how to apply to university, student housing options, visits to all universities, navigating public transport, free student support services, scholarships and financial assistance, making friends at university (mentoring), finding casual employment, cooking on a budget and more.

Cheri said she would encourage SIDE Year 12 ATAR regional students to apply in 2020.
