Course Content Description:

A3PSY

In this unit, students:

  • focus on a number of concepts that assist them to have a better understanding of human behaviour
  • explore concepts relating to one’s self, including an understanding of the brain and nervous system; the impact of heredity, hormones and psychoactive drugs on thoughts and behaviour; and examine cognitive processes of memory, learning and behaviour modification
  • explore concepts relating to others, including an understanding of conflict resolution; understanding theories of the socialisation process in families; examine theories of language development; understand differences in communication styles; and examine features of persuasive communication
  • examine ethics of psychological research and engage in detailed investigations, noting practical issues associated with research and its application

A4PSY

In this unit, students:

  • focus on a number of concepts that assist them to have a better understanding of human behaviour
  • explore concepts relating to one’s self, including an understanding of developmental psychology theories relating to cognitive, moral and identity development; and explore contemporary perspectives of personality theory, including trait, humanistic and social-cognitive theories
  • explore concepts relating to others, including an understanding of the influences on group behaviour; examine social psychology theories including attribution theory and cognitive dissonance theory that explain reasons for human behaviour; examine the characteristics of a sense of community; and understand stress and resilience
  • further explore psychological research methods introduced in unit 3
