Year 12 Leavers and Award Winners celebrated the end of their school life on Thursday 21 November in an event which was held at SIDE Leederville, and streamed via Webex to Year 12s unable to attend the ceremony in person. Many thanks to all those who attended for making it such a success and to those at SIDE who made it possible.
SIDE Year 12 Leavers were congratulated on their success in completing Year 12. Award Winners able to attend the Leederville ceremony were presented with their individual awards and other Award Winners acknowledged as part of the celebration.
A special guest at the ceremony was Dr Martin Dougiamas, a former distance education student, who later developed Moodle, the learning management system used by SIDE staff and students. Moodle is used internationally by schools and universities. He encouraged students in their post-school life to think about what they may be able to contribute to improving the lives of people on the planet through the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
Gwenyth Graham (AM) was also officially inducted into the SIDE Hall of Fame. Gwenyth was a Correspondence School student in 1938. In 1940 she was the first Correspondence School student to win the coveted scholarship to Perth Modern School, at that time a selective school which prepared students to study at the University of Western Australia. She later demonstrated a commitment to social justice for groups within the community through a range of church and welfare organisations.
Following the ceremony Leederville students enjoyed a morning tea with their guests and school staff. A highlight was cutting and eating the Year 12 Leavers cake which was enjoyed by all!
